How-To: Clean Your Dogs Teeth

canine dental hygieneCleaning your dog’s teeth can keep them healthy and if you are able to do it from home it will save you tons of money. The process is relatively simple once you get going. You will need to shop for a few items before you can actively keep your dogs teeth brushed. It’s recommended that you clean your dogs teeth daily to prevent plaque and decay. Items needed include either a toothbrush or dental sponge, and toothpaste. Optional items include dental chew, water pik, and a few other items that are more of a personal choice.

The first step is to get your dog used to the taste of toothpaste. You can do this by placing a few drops on your finger for them to lick off. It may take a few tries before they get the hang of it. Also toothpaste comes in a variety of flavors so you may need to try different kinds till you find one that your dog is satisfied with. The two most popular flavors are poultry and malt.

The next step is to get your dog used to having an object placed against their gum line and teeth. Most dogs are hesitant if you try to use a toothbrush right away so try rubbing toothpaste against your dogs front teeth with your finger. Next introduce the toothbrush.

Do only a few teeth at a time until they are fully comfortable with having the brush inside their mouth. Then brush all of their teeth on a daily basis to keep tartar from building up.
